How to Help Your Parents Use Uber

Simplified & Ready to Share With Them!

Why It’s Useful:

• In an emergency when home alone and/or on their own and shouldn’t drive.
• When they are tired or it’s late or it’s too dark and it’s safer for someone else to drive them.
• When there is lots of traffic or poor road conditions and it’s better not to drive themselves.
• Because they eventually shouldn’t / won’t be able to drive any more and this will help them maintain their independence.
• Because it’s empowering for them to feel like they are using something new like this!

What: Almost everyone knows Uber is a way to get a ride somewhere. We like it best of the ride sharing apps for our parents because their app is the easiest to use (from a parent perspective). If your parent has any type of Apple or Android smart phone, they can and should have it on their phone.

How to Explain 4 Different Ways:

A. Send Text (Takes 10 Seconds)

10 seconds to copy/paste and send, and you’ll make their day that you were thinking of them! If your parents have an Android phone, just swap out the link.

I think you should have Uber on your phone - it’s super helpful in an emergency as well as if you don’t feel up to driving. Here’s a link to download Uber from the Apple App Store to your phone -
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/uber-request-a-ride/id368677368. Try it out and let me know after you’ve taken a ride!

B. Send an Email (Takes 1 Minute)

Hi Mom/Dad,

I think you would find it helpful to have Uber on your phone. Here’s why:
1. You’re tired, it’s too dark, or you just don’t feel like driving.
2. In an emergency in case you are home alone or need to get somewhere and can’t drive yourself.
3. Because it’s incredibly convenient to have set up and you’ll feel good knowing it’s there in case you need it!

And here are 3 simple steps to setting it up:
1. Go the App Store on your phone, search for Uber, and download it.
2. When you open the app, it will walk you through set up - just follow the directions on screen - make sure you in particular you set up your home address and enter your credit card for billing.
3. Here’s a link to download Uber from the Apple App Store to your phone -

C . Over the Phone (Takes 5-15 Minutes)

If one parent might understand this better or have an even bigger reason to find it helpful, do the call with just that parent to get the ball rolling. Then that parent can explain to the other!

Hi Mom,
You have a few minutes? I wanted to help you set up Uber on your phone because I think you’d find it really helpful. Have you ever heard of Uber?

It’s an app on your phone where a driver shows up wherever you are - home, at a restaurant, at an airport - literally anywhere, and takes you somewhere. And it’s really nice because once you get in, they already know where to take you and they are paid automatically. I think you’d really find it useful to have if you just don’t feel up to driving, if you have an emergency, or a lot of other reasons as well. Can I walk you through setting it up right now?

Ok, first off, put me on speaker phone if you are on your mobile phone to make this easier. Then open the App Store on your phone and search Uber. Once you find it, click download and let me know when it is finished downloading.

Ok, now open the app, and lets walk through their setup directions. Tell me everything you see on each screen and I’ll explain what it means and what to do.

Now, lets add your home address and payment information - that way, whenever you use it, it makes it so quick and easy to use.

Ok, now let’s pretend you want to get taken somewhere. So lets say you are home and you want to get to your favorite restaurant. So go to the Home Screen - select Home for the From field, then start typing in the name of the restaurant in the To field and it should bring it up. Click on it when you see it. Then, you will see the different types of cars you can take. I find it’s always best to do the most economical one unless you are going to the airport and have a lot of luggage, or you are with a group of people and need a bigger car. The price fluctuates slightly based on the demand of their cars at any given time. Once you select a car option, it will then tell you how long it will take for the car to arrive - usually not that long - and you can literally watch the car in real time as it drives to your house.

What doesn’t make sense or you find confusing?

Ok, why don’t you test out doing this once so you know you can do it. What do you having coming up in the next week you could use this for instead of driving just to get the hang of it?
Great - do it then, and remember you don’t have to pay them at the end - it all happens automatically, you just get out and leave.

Call me after and tell me how it goes!

D. In-Person - Perfect for Your Next Visit! (Takes 15-30 Minutes)

Sit with your parent(s) in a nice quiet place with their phones handy so you can walk them through it. Let them do it on their phone instead of you doing it so they get the hang of it. Show them examples on your own phone as you walk through it.

Ok, so let’s start with what is Uber? It’s an app on your phone where a driver shows up wherever you are - home, at a restaurant, at an airport - literally anywhere, and takes you somewhere. Next, why I think you should have it on your phones I think you’d really find it useful to have if you just don’t feel up to driving, if you have an emergency, or a lot of other reasons as well.

Ok, so now let’s set it up. Open the App Store on your phone and search Uber. Once you find it, click download and let me know when it is finished downloading.

Ok, now open the app, and lets walk through their setup directions together and I’ll help you fill in what you need to and skip what isn’t really necessary.

Now, lets add your home address and payment information - that way, whenever you use it, it makes it so quick and easy to use.

Or should we do it together even today when we have to go to xxx?

I can’t wait to hear what you think, and I think it’s really smart you have this on your phone as I think you’ll find a number of ways it will be really useful.
